A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.

Although not quite at the identical stature as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.

“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a new presidential term.

“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”

The gathering, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.

The animal, contributed by a first responder, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “6-7” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The trend became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.

A New Life

Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.

“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to begin the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.

“It represents the character of Miami: happy, multicultural, and based in heritage that bring people together. Each year, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”

Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
