The daughter of previous South African President Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terrorism-related allegations at the beginning of her trial in the coastal city of the city of Durban.

Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being charged over remarks she published on digital networks several years back during deadly unrest in South Africa that followed the detention of her parent.

A period of anarchy in various areas of the country in July 2021, including theft and arson, caused at least 300 deceased and led to damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).

She has been accused of inciting this turmoil and confronts allegations of incitement to commit terrorism and civil unrest.

History of the Proceedings

The protests were concentrated in the provinces of the Gauteng province and KZN and followed the ex-leader's arrest for ignoring a judicial ruling to give evidence at an inquiry into claims of corruption while he was holding office.

The defendant has repeatedly refuted the allegations against her, with her legal representative earlier describing the prosecution's evidence as weak.

She has also consistently claimed the accusations against her were an effort to address political grievances with her dad after he started his own political party and competed against the ruling party.

Support and Court Representation

This was echoed by the foundation, which claimed the legal matter was an "abuse of power" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and familial harassment" against the former president and his family.

A handful of backers from her group, her party, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other party leaders participated in the hearings inside.

Her legal team has argued that the testimony presented by prosecutors is unconvincing and does not have concrete proof for a guilty verdict.

Key Points of the Trial

  • Digital comments from the past form the basis of the government's case
  • Fatal protests in recent years resulted in significant casualties and economic destruction
  • The defendant faces multiple allegations of provocation to unrest
  • Court proceedings are anticipated to proceed for several court sessions

The court case continues as both sides present their arguments before the court in what is expected to be a carefully observed legal battle with major politically charged implications for South Africa.
