"When are you interviewing the Haim sisters?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: I also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple famous fans have publicly begged for the position.

One thing is obvious something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos repeatedly show them marching in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a bass'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to form a group."

"Therefore everyone gets an invitation to be the fourth member of Haim."

Grammy Recognition

The band have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the nomination resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge milestone," says Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project came out of a phase of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The themes track endings and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound toughness called for a fresh approach – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic horror stories.

A former partner left Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

Yet the sister act will forever be their top focus.

"We have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
