Shoaib Bashir Earns Surprise Selection in English Ashes Squad

The English team has opted for a 12-man squad just two days before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise spot.

Bashir's selection indicates that the tourists will delay until the morning of the initial match to decide whether the venue conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.

Both pace bowlers are part of the selected squad, showing there are no concerns about either fast bowler's fitness.

The other seamers round out the attack, with the latter expected to be omitted if Bashir enters the final team.

Pitch Factors Favor Seamers

Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has hosted five past matches.

In those matches, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.

Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.

At a venue known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers is still the more likely decision.

Alternative Choices Considered

Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be brought into the side to offer some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.

However the coach has chosen to stick with Bashir, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.

Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”

“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of spin bowling in matches Down Under.

“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they perform and excel out here.”
