The network's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family go about their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
