We are checking video footage and photographs circulated this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is under way.

The initial step to verify the site from which the images were from was based on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.

Identifying other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured.

We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
