Uche Fuels Comfortable Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Missing star figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable result that all but secures them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal direct passage to the knockout stages, particularly following a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This occasion provided a platform for several Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning since joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, finding the net for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their league season proved outmatched against a largely second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were further depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Control Established from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, fizzing a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the official dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
