As a notable development, Walmart has begun enforcing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can buy during a single visit. This new rule officially takes effect as of early November, according to a company memo shared with employees.

While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that depicted a customer buying a massive amount of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The employee seen in the video received widespread backlash for allowing the large-scale transaction to go through.
Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses
The updated guideline specifies that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card boxes or packs per store visit. However, the wording has sparked debate due to its vagueness. Precisely what counts as a "box" is not defined, and whether someone could buy five premium Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Moreover, since the limit is tied to each visit, theoretically an eager reseller could make multiple trips—purchasing the maximum each time—to accumulate significant stocks throughout the day.
The Scalping Phenomenon
For the average collector, this approach might seem over the top, but for scalpers, it's standard practice. Over the past few seasons, scalpers have greatly contributed to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.
Certain buyers aim to sell unopened products for a profit, while others search for rare cards that can command extraordinary prices. For instance, the Mega Lucario ex card in recent releases has been listed for over $800 in online marketplaces.
Upcoming Releases
The new rule coincides with the approaching launch of the latest Pokémon expansion, scheduled for November 14th. Pre-release sales indicate chase cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex listed for around fifteen hundred dollars, highlighting the persistent interest and potential scalper target.
